Sonoma Coast Tile Installation Services

All tile projects start with a good layout. The size and type of tile you choose is not just a black and white decision and should be influenced by the size of the space you are working with and what elements are within it such as the location of windows and fixtures, the distance between walls and the shape of the space you are building in. Often times the difference between going with a slightly larger or smaller tile or a certain type of joint layout will mean having perfectly size even cuts along all the corners of walls or ending up with little tiny stripes and small cuts against each of them. This is where a good layout is so critical not only for the purpose of esthetics in the long run but also to make the project easier and take less time. Nothing looks worse than ending up with a long string of small 1 inch cuts along a wall just because the spot you started at was not measured properly or because the size of tile selected was a 12 inch instead of a 16 or 18 inch version of the same tile.

Not all points can be perfect and sometimes its inevitable that you end up with some small tile cuts here and there or need to choose the lesser of two evils by putting a small cut in an area that's less noticeable. This all comes from the layout though and no good tile setter ever just starts setting tile down without a proper layout. A complete bathroom, kitchen or floor project starts by taking measurements of all these factors and then making suggestions to the homeowner on the best size and type of tile to be used based on the them and taking into account the owners esthetic and utilitarian needs.

Some project may need a smooth or rough surface tile for slip protection. Some with hard water may wish to avoid marble and slate tiles to avoid the white calcium stains that will come with it, some may prefer a porcelain to a natural stone for durability and ease of cleaning or may want small grout joints to make the cleaning process easier with less surface of grout. These are all factors that we will go through with you to define the best possible types and sizes of tiles to use for your project. We also understand that by the time you make it to us for the installation, you may have already worked with a designer, selected and bought the material you wish to use... in which case, we will still do a layout and find the best possible place the start with full tile and best point to add accents you may have chosen.

Types of Tile & Stone

We install all types of ceramic, porcelain or natural stone tile including marble, travertine, limestone, granite and quartz.

Ceramic Tile

Ceramic tile is a natural product made up of clay, a number of other naturally occurring minerals, and water. Glazed ceramic tile has a ceramic coating applied to the tile body, which gives the tile its color and finish.

Porcelain Tile

Porcelain Tile is a newer type of ceramic tile. It is made from finer, denser clay and is fired at higher temperatures. Also, porcelain tile is tougher, more resistant to scratches and stains than other types and more durable too. It can easily endure heavy foot traffic at both residential and commercial locations.

Marble Tile

Marble Tiles are known for its quality, normal sparkle and nature of stone. These Tiles are truly magnificent to look at, they are beautiful and always unique and highly durable. They are also very versatile. It doesn't require of any kind of chemical treatment.

Granite Tile

Granite is an igneous rock that gets formed when exposed to high heat. Granite tiles are very dense and robust. Its density and durability make granite highly resistant to damage or signs of wear. Its structure is crystalline, and it contains quartz, mica, and feldspar minerals.

Travertine Tile

Travertine is a common natural stone that is used in bathrooms. Unpolished travertine stone has a naturally nonslip texture. This makes it great for being installed in bathrooms, showers and floors. Travertine is a great stone for being installed around pools if you live in climate that is warm year-round.

Limestone Tile

Limestone is a material that can be used to decorate any space. Tiles made of limestone have beautiful, natural textures since they are made from minerals that naturally settle on the earth's surface over thousands of years. The tiles can be used inside or out to give a finished, beautiful look to any space.

Slate Tile

Slate is a durable, finely foliated, and brittle stone, which comes in a wide range of colors, depending on the location and minerals of the slate in question. It is often black, dark green, and gray, but can also include instances of red, purple, gold, and blue.

Mosaic Tile Accents

In essence, describing a tile design as “mosaic” means that it consists of small (typically no larger than 2-inch by 2-inch) pieces arranged together to form a larger pattern. While mosaic styles can range from simple to complex, these artistic creations nearly always feature repeating shapes or sets of shapes

Quartz Tile

Quartz tiles, also known as agglomerate or engineered tiles, are a composite material made from a combination of resin, quartz, sand, color pigment and more often than not crushed mirror pieces.

Accents - Mosaics, Patterns, Feature Stripes

Weather as a free standing accent point or as part of a installed project. Accents and Mosaics on there own or interlaced within a floor or wall can add en element of beauty as well as for the purpose of enhancing the layout. Often time a perimeter border can be added to a floor or wall in order to make it so that full size tile cuts lay in between in perfect order without any small cuts or uneven layout between the sides.

Accents like feature stripes in a shower can break up the wall into a 1/3 to 2/3 ratio... otherwise known as the "Golden Ratio" in mathematics which is widely considered a ratio that produces beauty and purpose. In separating a wall into 2 parts where one part is approximately twice the size of the other, it generates a feeling of better geometrical purpose and is pleasing to the eye to look at. These stripes can also be run vertically creating a "waterfall" type effect. Adding diamond accents in the corners of 4 tiles is a great way to break up the manotany of a large open floor space and add a bit of color or personal touch to it.

There are many type of accents that can be done depending on the layout you decide to go with:

  • Straight Joint
  • Diagonal Joint
  • Brick Joint
  • Diagonal Brick Joint
  • Pinwheel
  • Offset Size Patterns

Whatever your needs are... or even if you do know what you are looking for. We will work with you to find what that is and then build it for you. It's not always easy to envision what the end result of a project will look like when you don't spend your life building with tile like we do. That's why we will take the time to explain to you in as much detail as possible how things will turn out when complete and show you examples of what it will look like to be sure you are getting exactly what you want.
